Moving from Academic Studies to Major

Undergraduate students who have been admitted into an Academic Studies program at UTSA will need to take both prerequisite coursework and core classes to help them prepare for their selected major.

Carlos Alvarez College of Business

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Actuarial Science program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1214 Calculus I (TCCN MATH 2413) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Accounting program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.S. in Applied Cyber Analytics program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1093 Precalculus (TCCN MATH 2312) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Business Analytics program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Cyber Security program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. or B.A. in Economics program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Finance program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Human Resources Management program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Information Systems if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Management program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Academic Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. Management Science program after they complete the following coursework:

  • WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (Q) (grade of “C-” or higher) or equivalent (TCCN ENGL 1301)
  • MAT 1133 Calculus for Business (grade of “C-” or higher) or equivalent (TCCN MATH 1325)
  • 12 credit hours of UTSA business courses required in the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK)

Additionally, Academic Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Academic Studies students who fulfill these requirements will be admitted into the BBA program if they have a 2.20 GPA or higher for all College of Business courses completed when they are evaluated.

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Marketing program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1325) or higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Operations and Supply Chain Management program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Real Estate Finance and Development program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.S. in Statistics and Data Science program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1214 Calculus I (TCCN MATH 2413) or higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

College of Education & Human Development

Equity and Education students and Interdisciplinary Studies students (B.A. degrees) with a teacher certification concentration declare their concentration at the time they are an incoming freshman/transfer student. There are no additional admission requirements for the following:

  • Equity and Education: Core Subjects with Science of Teaching Reading: Early Childhood–Grade 6 with Bilingual Education Supplemental Certification Concentration*
  • Equity and Education: Core Subjects with Science of Teaching Reading: Early Childhood–Grade 6 with English as a Second Language Supplemental Certification Concentration
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: Grades 4–8 Bilingual Core Subjects Certification Concentration*
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: Grades 4–8 ESL Certification Concentration
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: Grades 4–8 Language Arts/Reading/Social Studies Certification Concentration
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: Grades 4–8 Mathematics/Science Certification Concentration
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: EC–12 Special Education Certification Concentration

For admission to the Educator Preparation Program, students (within the identified concentrations) must meet the following criteria, as established by the State Board for Educator Certification:

  • Attain junior standing (60 semester credit hours)
  • Complete all core requirements
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) .
  • Have completed 12-15 hours of content coursework. Math and Science certification tracks must have 15 hours completed
  • TSI MET or Passing scores on the SAT or ACT* SAT: Composite score of 1040 or higher ACT: Composite score of 23 or higher (Exam scores cannot be mixed and matched)
  • Demonstrate English Language Proficiency by earning a “C+” or higher in a public speaking course (WRC 1013, WRC 1023 COM 1043, COM 1053, COM 2113. Credit for WRC 1013 and WRC 1023 through AP or CLEP is accepted
  • Read and Sign the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Read and Sign the Criminal History Policy
  • Submit authorization for a Texas Department of Public Safety criminal background report
  • Complete the teacher candidate interview screening. Pass the Teacher Candidate Admission Quiz with a 72 or higher

*In addition, students pursuing bilingual teacher certification concentrations must take the Assessment Language Proficiency in Spanish (ALPS).

Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering & Integrated Design

Architecture and Construction Planning Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.S. in Architecture program after they complete the following coursework with a “C-” or higher in each course:

  • ARC 1113
  • ARC 1213
  • ARC 1223
  • ARC 1313
  • ARC 1331
  • ARC 1513
  • Submit a Gateway Application (an application to the major) for review and consideration for admission to the major.

Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences Studies students must complete MAT 1214 (Calculus I) with a C- or better:

  • Within 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Be in good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

Students must be Calculus I eligible (C- or higher in MAT 1093) with:

  • No more than 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences Studies students must complete MAT 1214 (Calculus I) with a C- or better:

  • Within 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Be in good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences Studies students must complete MAT 1214 (Calculus I) with a C- or better:

  • Within 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Be in good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

Students must be Calculus I eligible (C- or higher in MAT 1093) with:

  • Within 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Be in good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

Architecture and Construction Planning Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.S. in Construction Science program by departmental review.

Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences Studies students must complete MAT 1214 (Calculus I) with a C- or better:

  • Within 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Be in good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

Architecture and Construction Planning Studies Students will be evaluated for admission into the B.S. in Interior Design program after they complete the following coursework with a “C-” or higher in each course:

  • ARC 1113
  • ARC 1213
  • ARC 1223
  • ARC 1313
  • ARC 1331
  • ARC 1513
  • Submit a Gateway Application (an application to the major) for review and consideration for admission to the major.

Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences Studies students must complete MAT 1214 (Calculus I) with a C- or better:

  • Within 3 semesters from term of entry (math must be taken in each semester of enrollment)
  • Be in good academic standing (>2.5 GPA)

College for Health, Community and Policy

To declare a Health major, a student must have completed 30 semester credit hours, be in good academic standing with the university, and successfully completed the following or equivalent courses with a grade of “C-” or higher:

  • WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (Q) (3 credit hours)
  • WRC 1023 Freshman Composition II (Q) (3 credit hours)
  • HTH 2413 Introduction to Community and Public Health (3 credit hours)

No specific criteria to move to intended major. Students must be a second semester freshman.

All applicants for admission to the Athletic Training concentration will be initially admitted into the Kinesiology program without a concentration. In order for a student to declare the Athletic Training concentration, a student must be admitted to the Athletic Training Apprenticeship Program and meet the following academic criteria:

  1. Complete 30 semester credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.50;
  2. (2) Successfully complete the following or equivalent courses with a grade of “C-” or better:
    • BIO 1233 Contemporary Biology I (3 credit hours)
    • KIN 2303 Foundations of Kinesiology (3 credit hours)
    • MAT 1073 Algebra for Scientists and Engineers (3 credit hours)
    • WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (3 credit hours)

All applicants for admission to the Exercise Physiology concentration will be initially admitted into the Kinesiology program without a concentration. Students may declare the Exercise Physiology concentration after the following criteria have been met:

  1. Complete 30 semester credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5;
  2. Successfully complete the following or equivalent courses with a grade of “C-” or better:
    • BIO 1233 Contemporary Biology I (3 credit hours) OR BIO 1203 Biosciences I for Science Majors (3 credit hours)
    • KIN 2303 Foundations of Kinesiology (3 credit hours)
    • MAT 1023 College Algebra with Applications (3 credit hours) OR MAT 1073 Algebra for Scientists and Engineers (3 credit hours)
    • WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (3 credit hours)

All applicants for admission to the Kinesiology and Health Science concentration will be initially admitted into the Kinesiology program without a concentration. Students may declare the Kinesiology and Health Science concentration after the following criteria have been met:

  1. Complete 30 semester credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.75;
  2. Successfully complete the following or equivalent courses with a grade of “C-” or better:
    • BIO 1233 Contemporary Biology I (3 credit hours) and BIO 1201 Biosciences I Laboratory for Science Majors (1 credit hour)
    • KIN 2303 Foundations of Kinesiology (3 credit hours)
    • MAT 1073 Algebra for Scientists and Engineers (3 credit hours)
    • WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (3 credit hours)

No specific criteria to move to intended major. In order to be eligible to apply for admission into any Educator Preparation Program, students have to meet the following criteria, as established by the State Board for Educator Certification:

  • Attain junior standing (60 semester credit hours)
  • Complete all core requirements
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) .
  • Have completed 12-15 hours of content coursework. Math and Science certification tracks must have 15 hours completed
  • TSI MET or Passing scores on the SAT or ACT* SAT: Composite score of 1040 or higher ACT: Composite score of 23 or higher (Exam scores cannot be mixed and matched)
  • Demonstrate English Language Proficiency by earning a “C+” or higher in a public speaking course (WRC 1013, WRC 1023 COM 1043, COM 1053, , COM 2113. Credit for WRC 1013 and WRC 1023 through AP or CLEP is accepted
  • Read and Sign the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Read and Sign the Criminal History Policy
  • Submit authorization for a Texas Department of Public Safety criminal background report
  • Complete the teacher candidate interview screening. Pass the Teacher Candidate Admission Quiz with a 72 or higher

Admission into the major as part of a cohort group occurs in the Fall Semester. In order to declare a major in Nutrition and Dietetics, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete all support courses and most of the Texas Core requirements with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and be in good standing with the university.
  • Complete all prerequisite courses with a grade of “C-” or better. Detailed information about the courses, including the Texas common course numbers may be obtained from the Undergraduate Catalog.
  • Complete NDT 2043 Introduction to Nutritional Sciences or BIO 2043 Nutrition or equivalent course with a grade of “B-” or better.
  • May not repeat a prerequisite course more than twice to meet the grade requirement.
  • Complete all support courses (prerequisite courses) by the end of the summer semester prior to entering the program in the fall semester.
  • Submit a program application, transcripts (unofficial), two completed reference forms (program specific), preferably from faculty members, a résumé, volunteer summary, and a statement indicating personal career goals, knowledge of the profession, commitment, interests, and motivation.
  • Have a personal interview with the program faculty (by invitation) and receive a decision letter indicating acceptance.
  • Obtain a criminal background check.

Transfer students must meet all the above criteria and meet all the UTSA undergraduate admission requirements. Official transcripts from all institutions attended must be submitted.

All applicants will be initially admitted into the Nutrition and Health program without a concentration. Applicants for admission to the Maternal and Child Health & Nutrition or Sustainable Nutrition and Food Systems concentrations will be initially admitted into the Nutrition and Health program without a concentration

In order for a student to declare a concentration, a student must meet the following academic criteria:

  • Completion of 30 hours of prerequisite and/or support courses with a grade of “C-“ or better.
  • Have a minimum 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative (all completed coursework) GPA.

All applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work will be initially admitted into program but must meet the following criteria, at a minimum, to be formally admitted to the BSW Upper-Level Practice Sequence:

  • Complete at least 42 semester credit hours of coursework, including the majority of the Texas Core Curriculum
  • Attend a BSW Program Information Session
  • Submit a completed application for admission to the UTSA BSW program
  • Have an overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher
  • Complete SWK 1013 with a “C-“ or better
  • Complete SWK 2013 with a “C-“ or better either prior to admission or during the student’s first semester in the BSW Program
  • Complete STA 1053 Basic Statistics with a “C-” or better
  • Submit two Professional or Academic References
  • Submit a résumé
  • Submit a 2–4-page Application Essay

College of Liberal and Fine Arts

Students must audition and be accepted into the program.

Students must have a “C-” or higher in the following courses:

  • PSY 1013 Introduction to Psychology
  • One of the following math courses: MAT 1023, MAT 1033, MAT 1073, MAT 1093, MAT 1163, MAT 1193, MAT 1214, or STA 1053

College of Sciences

Students must be TSI Complete.

Students admitted into the Academic Studies Program must complete the following requirements for admission to the major:

  • Completion of College Algebra (MAT1023 or MAT1073) or higher, and
  • Completion of Biosciences I (BIO 1404).

Students must be TSI complete.

Students admitted to the Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences Studies Program must complete the following requirements for admission to the major:

  • Eligible to enroll in CS 1083 Programming I for Computer Scientists (or a higher-level Computer Science course)
  • • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1093 Precalculus (or a higher-level math course)

Students admitted into the Academic Studies Program must complete the following requirements for admission to the major:

  • Completion of College Algebra (MAT1023 or MAT1073) or higher, and
  • Completion of Biosciences I (BIO 1404).

Online Programs

Business Studies students will be evaluated for admission into the B.B.A. in Cyber Security-Online program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Eligible to enroll in MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN MATH 1324) or a higher-level math course

Additionally, Business Studies students must be in good academic standing (UTSA GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Students interested in changing their major to Multidisciplinary Studies- Online must request this change through their currently assigned academic advisor and complete the Change of Campus Form. This change is not official until the advisor approves the request and makes the necessary update to the student’s file.
