Provisionally Independent

You selected “Yes” to the “Do unusual circumstances prevent the student from contacting their parents or would contacting their parents pose a risk to the student?” question on the FAFSA form, you are considered Provisionally Independent.

To have UTSA confirm your Independent status you will need to:

1. Submit the Confirmation of Unusual or Other Circumstance Form for the applicable aid year.
2. Submit a typed letter detailing the unusual circumstances that explain the reason for your request and discuss your relationship with your parents.
3. Two statements from professionals (teacher, counselor, clergy, social worker) familiar with your situation that further outlines and verifies the special circumstances. The statements must include an address and telephone numbers from the professionals and should be on letterhead.
4. If you have an approved Dependency Override from a previous institution for the prior academic year, submit documentation showing that the institution approved your request.
5. Submit a signed copy of your most recent aid year’s federal income tax return, if you filed, and all W2s or paystubs/W2 if you earned income but did not file.

You will be sent a notification of the result to your UTSA email address. We cannot offer you aid until we can confirm your unusual circumstance. If your request is denied, you will be asked to correct your FAFSA application by submitting Parental Information, or you may have the option to be awarded a Direct Unsubsidized Loan at the dependent level only.

If you selected unusual circumstance in error, please go back into the FAFSA and make a correction and add your parents as contributors.
